Space Group was appointed for the design and renovation of the staff restaurant at Imperial Brands in Bristol, a project that demanded a keen eye for both function and style. Partnering directly with the client and CBRE, the principal contractor, our assignment was to reimagine the restaurant to meet a fresh, innovative brief set forth by the main client and their catering team.

The project’s heart lay in transforming the restaurant into a space that buzzed with energy and warmth, a place where staff could gather, dine, and recharge during their day. This transformation was inspired by Bristol itself, aiming to reflect the city’s vibrant urban culture within the restaurant’s walls.

Our journey with this project extended from the conceptual stage right through to the technical design phase, following the RIBA Plan of Work, culminating in our being chosen to bring our vision to life through construction that included the following:

– The removal and replacement of old furniture, fixtures, and equipment.

– Mechanical and electrical alterations to support the innovative design.

– Installation of flooring, alongside a selection of loose and custom furniture.

– A visually striking Instagram wall, complemented by feature lighting.

– Decorative lighting throughout, including specialised heat lamps over the servery.

– Wall enhancements, including tiling, decoration, signage, and faux plant wall.

– New counters featuring reclaimed timber planks, repurposed from unused furniture.

– The construction of replica shipping containers to form the new restaurant walls.

– The installation and commissioning of catering equipment to streamline service.

In designing the space, we introduced a variety of dining experiences including a self-service grab-and-go, a coffee bar, live-action theatre cooking, traditional hot meal counter, and a self-service salad bar. The redesigned restaurant embraced an industrial urban theme, prioritizing wellbeing through the integration of natural elements, comfortable and adaptable furniture, soft lighting, and an array of eclectic finishes. This approach has crafted a multifaceted space, ideal not just for dining but also for relaxation, socializing, and hosting events, embodying a perfect blend of productivity and tranquillity.
