SCOPE
Space Group’s design consultancy team were asked to join the client led design team to aid in creating a new multi-million pound catering and dining facility. The brief was to improve the eating experience for its students and to drastically improve service times and queuing issues.
OVERVIEW
The scope of works included a brand new back of house catering operation with improved work flows, storage capacity and equipment. In addition to this, two new front of house servery operations to cater for their pre-school and senior pupils.
This was a very interesting and challenging project. The schools existing facility was centred around 2 mirrored servery counters with duplicate offers which generated queuing issues and increased service times. The brief was simple: Reduce queues, decrease waiting times, enhance the pupils experience while future proofing the design against growing pupil numbers. To aid us in this task, we used state of the art flow simulation software, to help justify and communicate our design intent to the various stakeholders at Taunton school. By utilising this technology, we were able to optimise the number of servery counters required as well as demonstrate the correct amount of seated covers needed within the dining hall. By presenting the school with a realistic 3D simulation with all of the output data such as peak queue length, maximum waiting times, dining capacity and total service time , we were not only able to ensure that all elements worked in symmetry but we could also ensure that the client was on board and fully behind our proposal. It is easy to over specify a design, but this software enables us to effectively demonstrate our designs in a unique way.
Although we separate design consultancy from our supply and install side of the business, on this occasion Taunton appointed us as their nominated supplier. This meaning, we not only designed the project, through the RIBA stages, but we also supplied and installed the equipment, counters and furniture.
Overall, this project perfectly demonstrates Space Group’s full range of capabilities. From design consultancy, contract furniture to bespoke fabrication and installation.
